Dropped off at Orient Point, NY with their gear, water, a few dates, and a personal VHF the team of 2 set off from the North side of Orient Pt. at 8:30 AM.

With a strong headwind chop out of the Northwest and clear visibility the duo paddled North, clean across the Long Island Sound from Orient Pt. (New York) to Hatchett Pt. (Connecticut) in approximately 4 hours time.

Date of Completion: 10/13/2023

Mode of Travel: Prone Paddle

Distance: 10 miles

Moving Time: 4 hours

Levels of Support: No guide boat. Truck transport to start point of paddle and truck pick up from end point.

Trip Report: Original intent on the day was to make landfall in Connecticut at Black Point (Northeast). At the start of the paddle we decided to head upwind (Northwest) to offset the potential East push we would get from the tide shift. But we ended up getting pushed further west than anticipated with the tail end of the flood, and were never pulled back east towards Black Pt., as the ebb tide drained out of the sound. Getting set towards the Connecticut River (Northwest) on the first half of the paddle, we adjusted our heading Northeast on the second half of the paddle to finish at Hatchett Pt. which lies to the west of Black Point.

Minimal boat traffic on the day, big tanker ship and tug boat sighting from afar. Couple sail boats out and about. Air temperature was cool. Water temperature was around 65 degrees.

Additional Notes: This paddle marks the 9th Point to Point Challenge of the 2023 season and the first aquatic challenge to cross state lines.

  • Jeremy Grosvener was riding a 17’ Unlimited (Bark)
