2021 Ride for Recovery: Bicycle

Anacortes, Washington to Sag Harbor, New York

June 1, 2021-June 30, 2021

The 2021 Ride for Recovery is in the books. Beginning on June 1st of 2021, three members of Dawgpatch Bandits set out to ride their bicycles from Anacortes, Washington to Sag Harbor, New York to promote fitness as a positive outlet for individuals in substance abuse and mental health recovery. This cross country bicycle tour covered 3,410 miles of rugged northern United States territory and was completed in 30 days. While the tour began with three cyclists set to take on this incredible endeavor, only two made it to the finish line. Beginning on the coast in northeastern Washington State, cyclists Drew Harvey, Payton Dwight, and Jimmy Beh set a course east towards the northern Cascade National Forest. The route proceeded to cover the states of Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. Rider Jimmy Beh took a hard fall in Northern Montana while trying to out bike an incoming thunder storm. Beh was stitched up at a frontier hospital in the next town of Jordan, MT and was advised to get home and visit a larger hospital for further evaluation. He has since made a full recovery.

In proper form this tour was completed within the 30 day goal set before the trip. In order to complete this riders, Harvey and Dwight, finished with a 118 mile a day average on the bicycles, and did not take a single day off throughout the entire journey, not to mention that they were sleeping in tents every night. This tour was unsupported, meaning the riders were carrying all of their own equipment, camping gear, food and tools. There was no support vehicle, no van following them along the way, and no designated rest stops to fuel up.

The Dawgpatch Bandits raised over $50,000 as a result of this campaign fundraiser. The funds raised during Ride for Recovery went directly towards the Dawgpatch Campaign to build outdoor fitness stations at rehabilitation and recovery centers in high impact areas across the United States. To date the Dawgpatch has built three fitness stations that are currently up and running. With the money raised from this ride Dawgpatch Bandits will be able to build 10 new fitness stations all across the country.

*Note All 10 fitness stations are now complete.
