POINT TO POINT CHALLENGES

SWIM, BIKE, PADDLE, RUN, HIKE.

Whether it be bicycling, swimming, paddling, running or hiking a Dawgpatch Point to Point Challenge involves getting from location ‘A’ to location ‘B’ (Point to Point) by self-powered means. Unlike traditional events that adapt a predetermined physical activity into an area or course, we allow the natural geography of a specific area to produce new and innovative challenges. In order to achieve this we follow a “see, map, execute” approach.

First: Observe and reflect on the area around you = SEE.

Second: Map potential challenges, plot routes, and determine proper modes of travel/traverse = MAP.

Third: Complete the challenge effectively and safely = Execute.

The physical and mental nature of a Dawgpatch Point to Point Challenge promotes competition with oneself in their own environment, and stands to act as a model that permeates every aspect of life.

PHILOSOPHY

“The whale ship was my Yale college and my Harvard.”

— Herman Melville, The Whale

“Because after the finish all the suffering turns to memories of pleasure, and the greater the suffering, the greater the pleasure. That’s Nature’s payback to the riders for the homage they pay her by suffering.”

— Tim Krabbe, The Rider

“….Lasting respect to those bold and enterprising ship masters…who periled their lives in a daring profession and perished in actual encounter with the monsters of the deep. Entombed in the ocean they live in our memory.”

— Sons of Southampton

“Each moment free from fear makes a man immortal.”

— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
